Lesson 7: The Toss - Initiating the Lift
Events and phases of the tennis serve: first backwards movement of the racket (SI), ball release by the tossing hand (BR), racket high point in the ‘trophy position’ (RHP), ball zenith during toss (BZ), racket low point immediately prior to forwardswing (RLP), and impact. Meaningful phases of the serve were then considered as toss time (BR-impact), swing time (SI-impact), ball placement (BR-BZ), upper arm cocking (RHP-RLP) and forwardswing (RLP-impact)
Critical instants of a serve -- (a) beginning of the windup, (b) end of the ascending windup, (c) end of the windup, and (d) ball impact.

Initiating the Lift
Some players start with the racket and ball above waist level and then bring both arms back down, like Andreas Beck. It is absolutely imperative that at the bottom of the drop you come to a complete pause, if only for a moment.
Many people have one jerky motion where they drop the tossing arm and come up in one quick motion. Watch how Beck comes to a complete stop so that he can "lift the lever" from the bottom to the top.
